About The Artist

Contemporary, expressionist painter working on canvas with acrylic and charcoal. Life-size, whimsical, sensual portraits of women and their clothes, wrapped in attitude.

Daniela Skrein was born in 1974 in Vienna, Austria.  One of the youngest students accepted to Vienna’s Fashion School Hetzendorf, she attended the rigorous art program receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Fabric Design & Silk Screen Printing (1988-1993).  At nineteen, Daniela relocated to Pasadena, California attending Art Center College of Art and Design with a major in Illustration (1993-1998).  Twelve years later, she completed a MAS in Art & Economy at the Angewandte University of Applied Arts in Vienna.  Her master thesis Hunting For Art — How And Why We Collect (2010) examines how emotions are triggered when looking at art and how they implicate art collector’s purchasing patterns.  In 2020, Skrein moved to Montana with her family to continue to develop a diverse body of work in painting, illustration, and writing.

Skrein’s background in fashion informs her style as an expressionistic painter.  Her pieces are sensual, almost whimsical and center around feminine subject matter, created on canvas with acrylic.  Music often informs her process. Her work celebrates the highlight of the moment when emotions accompany process, often evoked by the song played while working. Pieces are then named after the song — a practice which lead to the project A Day In A Life Of A Song (2011) a digital diary, where moods and thoughts were communicated daily with the help of song lyric excerpts.

“Art is the emotional expression of human personality.”

— Eugene Veron

Skrein’s first activism project Kids (2015), depicts children’s facial expressions at the moment they find out about the dire state our planet is in. Expressions are subtle, but meant to be a reminder of our responsibilities to combat climate change.

Numerous solo and group exhibitions showcased Skrein’s art, including shows in Kitzbühel, Vienna, Los Angeles, Boston, San Luis Obispo and others.

Daniela Skrein lives in Montana and Kitzbühel, Austria.
